PRAYERS FROM THE ARK was written and published first, and the poems are in the form of prayers. THE CREATURES' CHOIR was written quite a few years later and these last poems are more like letters to God, where the animals refer to their daily problems. The author did not write sentimental verse.

The poems of the animals seem to radiate with truth/5(28). This book is really beautiful - poems, which are prayers from all the animals on the ark, with drawings to go along. The drawings are beautiful, the poems are inventive and lovely/5.

Her masterpiece Prayers from the Ark was originally published by the private press of the abbey. The 27 poems, each a simple prayer by one of the animals in Noah¿s Ark.

I thought I was interesting. The poems are easy to read/5(2). This book consists of a selection of poems, translated from the French by Rumer Godden, from "Le Mieux Aime" () and "Prieres dans l'Arche" () by the Benedictine nun Carmen Bernos de Gasztold.

It is an illustrated collection of poems, each a prayer by an animal in Noah's Ark. The poems are accompanied by beautiful illustrations/5(8). Rumer Godden was the author of more than 60 books, including novels, short story collections, poetry, plays and non-fiction.

She published her 21st novel, "Cromartie vs. the God Shiva," in Rumer Godden died a year later on November 8,in 5/5(1). InCarmen Bernos de Gasztold ( – ) wrote a collection of poems entitled “Prieres Dans L’Arche.” This collection was subsequently translated into English as “ Prayers from the Ark ” by Rumer Godden.

The 27 poems (prayers) represent the imagined hopes, fears, and aspirations of the animals aboard Noah’s ark. "Prayers from the Ark" are what Carmen imagined the animals in Noah's Ark (and Noah himself!) were praying for. These poems brought Carmen renown, becoming a bestseller in Europe.

"The Creatures' Choir" likewise have poet animals declaiming, but no longer in supplication/5. These prayers were first published, in French, in by a private press.

Rumer Godden discovered a volume of them and translated them into English. The poem-prayers are at once reverent, humorous, realistic and concise. Read by: 2. Godden sought out the author and worked with Carmen to produce two translated books from her poems: Prayers from the Ark (published in English in ) and The Creatures’ Choir ().

I love, love, love Prayers from the Ark as much as I love the story of how it came into being. Some of the poems are cynical – the pig, for instance, talking of how hard it is to. I came across the book “Prayers of the Ark” in a second hand book shop, and it is still available in second hand copies, and I still find them magical in their simplicity, and I also find it amazing that a nun, enclosed away from the world in a religious order, could be given the encouragement and opportunity to write these poems.

With praying animals on every page, it seemed like a quirky children’s book written to make you smile but not much else. Sister Carmen Bernos de Gasztold was a Benedictine nun and gifted writer.

More Prayers from the Ark Prayers from the Ark. This is a wonderful book of poems by French writer Carmen Bernos de Gasztold, written during the grim years of the Second World War. Noah and a representative group of animals offer their own style of prayer, some funny, some sad, some full of hope, all brief and fresh.

"The Creatures' Choir," is a companion work to another separate volume, "Prayers from the Ark." My library carried a picture book version, translated by Rumer Godden and beautifully illustrated by Barry Moser. Once again, the poetry is tender and moving, although this time, a human voice cries out to Our Lord as well.
